What is The Difference Between a Thermostat and a Hi-Limit Switch in an HVAC system?

The roles of the thermostat and the hi-limit switch are both separate and interdependent in an HVAC system. The thermostat is tasked with temperature regulation, controlling the heating or cooling system to ensure the environment matches the set temperature preferences. The hi-limit switch, meanwhile, is a device that interrupts the system's operation if the temperature reaches dangerously high levels, thereby safeguarding against overheating risks.

What are Signs That an HVAC Hi-Limit Switch has Tripped Or Failed?

Symptoms that an HVAC system's hi-limit switch has either tripped or is not working correctly include the heating unit shutting down unexpectedly without reaching the set temperature, or the unit not starting up. This often means that the system has experienced overheating, which could be due to obstructed air circulation, a dirty filter or different mechanical complications.

Why is The HVAC System Not Maintaining The Set Temperature On The Thermostat?

An HVAC system might not maintain set temperatures because of thermostat issues, which can include poor placement or faulty operation that requires either calibration or replacement. Other causes could be related to the HVAC system, like dirty filters restricting airflow, leaks in the ductwork allowing air to escape or the system being the wrong size for the space.
