Directions
Pre-Installation Instructions
Be sure to follow all recommendations regarding weight limits and clearance areas when choosing a mounting location.
- Step 1. Select an installation location - Find an indoor space for the unit, away from water exposure or corrosive chemicals. Additionally, make sure there’s at least 5FT (1.5M) of clearance between the bottom of the unit and flammable materials. Refer to the operator’s manual for more information on how to select an appropriate location.
- Step 2. Acquire suitable mounting materials - Check the mounting location and suspension chain to make sure they can support the weight of the heater and accessories.
- Step 3. Prepare supply wiring - Provide copper supply wiring that’s rated to a minimum of 90°C (194°F). If needed, see the user’s manual for more details regarding wiring requirements.
- Step 4. Verify voltage and amperage - Make sure the power supply voltage and amperage in the proposed location matches the rating on the heater’s nameplate.
- Step 5. Cut power to the area - Turn off the power to the installation location at the breaker panel in order to minimize the risk of electric shock.
Installing the Element
Protect the lamp and tube heating elements by wearing gloves when handling them since perspiration can damage the quartz.
- Step 1. Put on gloves - Be sure to wear protective gloves when handling the element.
- Step 2. Prepare the element - Set the heater on a flat surface and remove the wiring compartment covers and outside hex nuts.
- Step 3. Position the element - Place the element in the L-shaped slots in the heater housing.
- Step 4. Attach the ring terminals - Connect the ring terminals from the factory wiring to the threaded studs on both sides of the element.
- Step 5. Secure the element - Replace the hex nuts on both ends of the element to hold it in place, then reinstall the wiring compartment covers.
Setting up the Heater & Wiring
Remember that RK series units are intended for ceiling mount only.
Mounting the Unit
- Step 1. Size the suspension chain - Use bolt cutters to cut the suspension chain to the desired length.
- Step 2. Anchor the suspension chain - Fasten the chain to the ceiling.
- Step 3. Connect the chain and heater - Attach the suspension chain to the heater with the provided S-hooks.
- Step 4. Tilt the heater (optional) - Adjust the chain to tilt the unit slightly, if desired.
Wiring the Heater
- Step 1. Connect the wiring to the panel - Attach the electrical supply wiring to a dedicated breaker at the main service panel, routing it through a line-voltage thermostat or switch before continuing to the heater.
- Step 2. Run wiring to the installation location - Route the supply wiring from the panel to the heater’s mounting location.
- Step 3. Wire the heater - Attach the supply wiring to the heater. Refer to the operator’s manual for more detailed instructions if needed.
